Robert Uttermark: Loan Number One

Robert Uttermark didn't know he made history 40 years ago. He was surprised when he was told that his 1973 home loan was the very first mortgage made by SDHDA.

Uttermark and Geneva, his wife of 51 years, closed the loan on their southwest Aberdeen home on September 4, 1973. They worked with the Aberdeen National Bank to obtain their home loan.

The Uttermarks moved to Aberdeen in 1970, when Robert was transferred with Montgomery Ward. Over the years he worked in several retail stores. Geneva spent her 37 year career working for St. Luke's Hospital.

The house has served them well. They raised their two children in the home. "The house holds a lot of memories," reflected Uttermark. "We've looked at other places as recently as a couple of years ago. We thought maybe we should get a place that's all on one floor," Uttermark commented, "but we've stayed here all these years. We're comfortable here."
