Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?
You can download an application or apply online. You can also call or e-mail our office to have an application mailed to you. Visit our Application page or the Contact Page for more information.

How does the Campaign work?
The volunteer group nominates the home of someone in the community. Paint and primer are purchased by the volunteer organization or can be billed directly to SDHDA. When the work is completed, receipts or invoices, photos of the finished project and the signed Lead Based Paint waivers must be returned to the SDHDA office. The paint and primer cost is then reimbursed to the organization or paid directly to the merchant.

What does the Campaign pay for?
The Paint-South Dakota Campaign will pay for paint and primer only. The volunteer group is responsible for supplies such as caulk, scrapers, ladders, brushes, buckets, etc.

Many groups discuss their plan and the Program with individuals and businesses within their community. Many other individuals, groups or businesses are willing to donate or contribute in other ways to the painting project. In addition to supplies being furnished, you may ask local donators for food, beverages, and t-shirts as they are all useful during the project.

If we have a museum or community building in town, can we paint that as our project?
No. It must be a private residence.

Do we have to do all the work on the selected Saturday?
No, any preparation work should be done prior to the selected final paint date. i.e. scraping, caulking, priming, etc.

What if it rains?
In the event of rain, the scheduled painting day can be moved to one of the other paint days available and should be coordinated with SDHDA.
