Emergency Shelter Grant Program
Program Description
The Emergency Shelter Grant Program provides grant funds for emergency homeless shelters. The program is designed to help improve the quality of existing emergency shelters for the homeless, to help make available additional emergency shelters, to help meet the costs of operating shelters, and to provide certain essential services to homeless individuals.
Funding Source
Federal Emergency Shelter Grant Program funds are provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Eligibility Requirements
The property must be maintained for the homeless population for an established period of time depending upon the activities for which program funds are expended.
Eligible Activites
Grant amounts may be used for one or more of the following activities relating to emergency shelters for the homeless:
- renovation, rehabilitation, or conversion of building for use as emergency shelters;
- provision of essential services concerned with employment, health, substance abuse, or education;
- payment of operating expenses such as maintenance, food, rent, insurance, utilities, and furnishings;
- and developing and implementing homeless prevention activities.
Application Procedure
Applications are made available by SDHDA to units of general local government and to private, nonprofit organizations, and are awarded on a statewide, competitive basis. Grant allocations are made annually in the spring.
