40 Years of Housing

In 1973, the South Dakota Legislature created the South Dakota Housing Development Authority because they knew that there was a need for decent, affordable housing and they wanted to improve the quality of life for the state's residents. They realized that individual communities were not able to meet local housing needs and that private enterprise could not, without assistance, produce the needed construction or rehabilitation of decent affordable housing at prices those families of low and moderate income could afford.

For the last four decades, SDHDA, along with many partners, has created affordable housing for thousands upon thousands of residents in South Dakota. Each one of the individuals and families that we have assisted has a story behind them. We can't tell all of their stories, but since it is SDHDA's 40th Anniversary we selected 40 stories to illustrate the people we've helped, the programs we have used and the partnerships that have grown.

We have accomplished a lot in 40 years, but there is a lot that remains to be done. This booklet is our way of saying thank you to the people of South Dakota for letting us do the important work of providing affordable housing opportunities to the residents of the state and making sure the future and quality of life in our state continues to improve and remain bright.
