Let’s Paint the Town
Through the “Paint-South Dakota” Campaign, the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) will assist 25 different communities in painting homes this year. “SDHDA purchases the paint and primer that is needed and volunteers organize, prepare and paint designated homes,” said Executive Director, Mark Lauseng.
This Campaign helps homeowners who need assistance with painting their home which saves them about $320 on the average.” In past years, local communities, businesses and residents have worked together in providing meals for the volunteers as well as printing t-shirts and donating other supplies.
248 homes across the state have been painted since the “Paint-South Dakota” campaign’s inception in 1998. Over 4,000 gallons have been used resulting in an investment of over $97,000 from SDHDA. In 2006, 23 homes were painted by more than 200 volunteers, some of which were SDHDA staff.
Volunteer groups are encouraged to nominate a homeowner by Friday, April 6, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. The house must be a single family home in rural or urban South Dakota, be in need of painting and be occupied by the owner. The homeowner must also be physically or financially unable to paint their home. Applicants can select from one of five Saturdays in June to complete the painting.
