Security Deposit Program Channels Funds to Homelessness Prevention Efforts
In an effort to prevent homelessness, the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) has allocated $100,000 of HOME funds for its Security Deposit Assistance Program. This is made possible through SDHDA’s receipt of funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
This Program provides funds to Public Housing Authorities and non-profit agencies to assist eligible South Dakotans to use in emergency housing situations. This will assist qualified families in a housing transition to secure permanent rental housing or secure a more affordable rental housing unit. Applicants (Public Housing Authorities and non-profit agencies) can request up to $25,000 per application and are eligible for an administrative fee – up to 10% of the requested grant amount to cover program expenses.
Funds will be awarded in the form of security deposit payments. All individuals assisted must be very low or low-income - 60% or less of the county area median income. Applications for funding will be reviewed by the SDHDA Board of Commissioners on a first-come, first-serve basis.
