High School Students Rebuild Computers for Elderly Properties

As part of a partnership between ExplorNet and the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA), 11 SDHDA properties are planning to receive a community computer.

The ExplorNet Computer Recycling program is a nonprofit which offers classes at nine high schools in South Dakota and more than 400 schools in a five-state region.

Students at Riggs High School in Pierre have learned how much their skills can benefit the community.  Throughout their course they worked to refurbish and upgrade old computers, which they donated to area elderly properties.

"The residents at the properties are thrilled to be getting computers that the students have rebuilt," said Linda Taylor, SDHDA's Service to Aging Residents Coordinator.  "The residents will use e-mail to communicate with their  grandchildren and families, make greeting cards, write letters, and explore the world wide web."

Students in ExplorNet's program benefit greatly also.  They learn how to build, rebuild, upgrade and maintain computers and computer systems.
