The Governor's House

In 1996, the Governor’s House program was created as a way to provide reasonably sized, affordable homes to income-qualified individuals and families.
More than 1,667 Governor's Houses have been sold to elderly, persons with disabilities, and income-qualified families in South Dakota. These South Dakota residents have a quality, low-cost, low-maintenance, energy efficient place to call home.
The benefits to South Dakota do not stop there, however. These new homes, many in small communities which had not seen newly constructed modest homes for years, account for jobs and dollars in the local economy through the sale of lots, foundation and concrete work, sale of appliances, and sale and installation of flooring.
The program has also benefited many inmates who have obtained life skills to better prepare them for life on the "outside."
The Governor's House Daycare Program has also relieved problems in almost 71 communities enabling families to access daycare alternatives they so desperately need to continue to work and live in the community of their choice.
Communities have also benefited. The Governor's House has helped increase the tax base and has given communities new homes from which to build better neighborhoods and needed daycares to care for their children.
